Sibiu parents plan protests over school food quality
Parents in Sibiu, Romania, are planning a protest at the County Council regarding the quality of food provided through the ‘Milk and Pastry’ program. Eugen Ceapă, a representative for parents at Gymnasium School No. 21 and initiator of a recent petition, expressed frustration that the new school year began with the same suppliers and products despite spring surveys indicating many children do not consume the provided items.
Ceapă stated that nothing has changed and children continue to discard the food. The Sibiu County Council confirmed that the current suppliers remain the same under framework agreements signed in 2025. Parents have also reported a lack of communication following the initial surveys intended to address food waste and quality.
In a separate local matter in Tomești, authorities are seeking solutions for meal quality at Kindergarten No. 1. Mayor Ștefan Timofte noted that while the school operates independently, the municipality is addressing the issue by restarting the procurement process for hot meals. Challenges include a low budget of 17 lei plus VAT per meal, which complicates the ability to provide adequate portions and variety.
