Sibiu-Pitești expressway: Poiana Tunnel TBM installation preparations reach 80%

Preparatory works for the installation of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to excavate the Poiana Tunnel have reached over 80% completion. The tunnel is located on Section 3 (Cornetu-Tigveni) of the Sibiu-Pitești expressway.

The DRDP Craiova announced that the necessary infrastructure and the launch platform for the TBM, colloquially referred to as the ‘mole’, are nearly finished. The assembly of the machine's components is scheduled to begin in early October following delivery from the manufacturer.

The Poiana Tunnel will measure 1,780 meters in length, making it the longest tunnel on this specific section of the expressway. The Sibiu-Pitești motorway serves as a critical road corridor connecting central Romania to the southern highway network, with Section 3 representing a challenging mountainous segment of the project.
