Sibiu Zoo faces controversy over live rabbit feeding to python

An incident at the Sibiu Zoo has sparked public outcry after a live rabbit was introduced into a python's enclosure during public visiting hours. Witnesses reported seeing the rabbit in the reptile's cage, prompting immediate intervention by keepers to remove the rabbit before an attack occurred.

Zoo officials confirmed the incident, attributing it to a staff error that allowed the feeding to be visible to the public. Liviu Todescu, head of the Sibiu Zoo service, explained that the python, which weighs over 40 kilograms and is more than 10 years old, often requires live prey because it refuses dead or frozen food. He stated that the animal needs to feel the warmth and heartbeat of its prey to trigger its hunting instinct.

Animal welfare organizations, including 'Totul Pentru Animale', have criticized the practice. Founder Tudor-Tim Ionescu argued that while hunting is natural, zoos are controlled environments where avoidable suffering should be minimized. The Federation Together for Animals (FIA) is planning a protest in Bucharest on October 4, coinciding with World Animal Day, to address the issue.
