SIBO identified as cause of post-meal bloating and gas

Abdominal bloating, excessive gas, and irregular bowel movements after meals may be caused by Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition where bacteria overpopulate the small intestine. Research indicates that SIBO is detected in 34% of individuals with digestive complaints and in 52% of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

If left untreated, SIBO can lead to malabsorption issues and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, significantly reducing quality of life. The condition occurs when excess bacteria ferment food, producing gases such as methane, hydrogen, and hydrogen sulfide.

Prof. Dr. Elif Öztürk from Acıbadem Fulya Hospital notes that unbalanced dietary habits—such as consuming highly processed, low-fiber, or repetitive foods—and the long-term use of certain medications can negatively impact the gut microbiome. Recommendations for management include maintaining a diverse diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and seeking medical consultation if digestive symptoms persist.
