Sibu road project to feature Southeast Asia’s longest elevated arch

A new road infrastructure project in Sibu, Sarawak, is set to feature an elevated segmental arch structure that aims to be the longest of its kind in Southeast Asia. The project, which involves upgrading Jalan Teku, Jalan Teku Pasai Siong, and Jalan Kemuyang, includes the construction of a 704-metre elevated section designed to traverse swampy terrain.

Sarawak Public Works Department Director Datu Dr. Cassidy Morris noted that the innovative arch design was specifically chosen to address soft ground conditions and mitigate the risk of settlement in the area. The first package of the project involves building approximately 6.172 kilometres of new road to JKR R3 standards, connecting Teku Pasai Siong and Kemuyang.

Construction is currently proceeding according to schedule, with an expected completion date in September 2027. Once finished, the road is intended to improve accessibility, strengthen movement between surrounding communities, and support future local development.
