Mount Etna eruption causes slope collapse and flight restrictions

Mount Etna is experiencing significant volcanic activity, including the collapse of the eastern slope of the Monte Rittmann cone. This event has opened a new effusive vent at an altitude of 2,350 meters, resulting in a lava flow that has since begun to cool. Explosive activity at the Voragine crater has sent an eruptive cloud reaching approximately 6,000 meters above sea level.

The ongoing activity has caused operational disruptions at Catania Airport. Due to the presence of volcanic ash in the atmosphere, the airport management (SAC) has implemented restrictions on incoming flights, limiting arrivals to a maximum of 10 aircraft per hour. Departures remain unaffected.

Tragically, a 30-year-old American tourist died after being struck by lightning while hiking on a restricted area of the volcano during a storm. Additionally, seismic activity was noted with a 3.9 magnitude earthquake affecting the northern slopes of the volcano, causing visible cracks in the ground near the Pernicana fault line.
