Sicilian fishing sector opens permanent crisis table over fuel costs
The Sicilian fishing industry is facing a severe crisis, prompting the establishment of a permanent crisis committee between regional authorities and labor unions. Representatives from Fai-Cisl, Flai-Cgil, and Uila-Uil Pesca met with the Regional Assessor for Agriculture, Rural Development, and Mediterranean Fisheries, Luca Sammartino, to address the sector's mounting difficulties.
A primary driver of the crisis is the rising cost of diesel, which has significantly impacted maritime operations. In Lampedusa, fishermen report diesel prices reaching €1.80 per liter, a 30% markup compared to the regional average due to local distribution monopolies. This increase directly reduces the income of workers whose earnings are tied to production shares.
Beyond fuel costs, the Cogepa association highlighted additional economic pressures, including damage to fishing nets caused by underwater drones. Unions have also raised concerns regarding the distribution of public compensation, arguing that regional funds intended to offset fuel costs must be guaranteed to reach workers directly rather than being absorbed solely by shipowners.
