Sicily reports nearly 12,000 youth returns from abroad over five years

Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani has announced that approximately 11,908 young people aged 18 to 39 have returned to Sicily from abroad between 2021 and 2025. This figure represents about 9.2% of the total number of young Italians returning to the country during the same period, placing Sicily second only to Lombardy in terms of repatriated youth.

While the trend shows a significant increase in returns, local data highlights ongoing challenges. In the province of Ragusa, for instance, 857 young people returned during this five-year span, but 2,377 under-40s departed, resulting in a net loss of 1,520 individuals.

Labor experts and unions, including Sinalp, note that many returns are motivated by personal or family reasons rather than immediate professional opportunities. There is a growing call for regional authorities to transform this influx of talent into sustainable economic development by improving the local job market and addressing the 'brain drain' phenomenon.
