Sicily airport privatization faces calls for transparency

The proposed privatization of Sac, the company managing the Catania and Comiso airports, has become a central issue in Sicilian regional politics. Lidia Adorno, a regional deputy for the Five Star Movement, has submitted an inquiry to President Renato Schifani demanding transparency regarding the sale of the majority stake. Adorno emphasized that the decision impacts a critical infrastructure serving as Sicily’s primary gateway and called for independent valuations of the company, clear selection criteria for private partners, and guarantees for employment and investment.

Simultaneously, the 'Patto per la Sicilia Orientale' (Pact for Eastern Sicily) has introduced a five-point agenda to the Syracuse Provincial Council. This proposal, supported by local officials, seeks to ensure that the public shareholder—the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Siracusa—demands full transparency on economic documents, an independent appraisal of share value, and the public disclosure of selection criteria and industrial plans. A key priority of the pact is securing binding commitments for the development of the Comiso airport and protecting local jobs.
