Sicily cultural heritage security sparks debate over staffing and surveillance

Debate has emerged regarding the security and management of Sicily’s archaeological sites and museums. Representatives from Italia Nostra Sicilia, including Nella Tranchina and Leandro Janni, have described the situation as “alarmant,” citing insufficient personnel, obsolete alarm systems, and inadequate video surveillance. They noted that several sites, such as the Greek shipwreck museum in Gela and various regional museums, face closures or limited access due to staffing shortages and maintenance needs.

In response, Sicilian Regional Assessor for Cultural Heritage Francesco Paolo Scarpinato has dismissed claims of widespread vulnerability, asserting that security remains a priority. He stated that sites are monitored by advanced technology, often integrated with law enforcement. To address long-standing staffing issues, the regional government has restarted recruitment processes after a 25-year hiatus, including the hiring of 10 permanent archaeological officials.

Planned technological upgrades include the installation of 60 new surveillance cameras at the Selinunte and Baglio Florio parks to establish a centralized operations room. The administration is also conducting studies to quantify staffing needs and may seek national government derogations to allow for larger-scale recruitment competitions to fill existing vacancies.
