Sicily authorities crack down on environmental crimes and illegal waste

Authorities in Sicily have conducted several operations targeting environmental crimes and illegal waste disposal. In Catania, the State Police coordinated an inspection of a garage in the Industrial Zone, uncovering multiple serious irregularities. The facility was found to be conducting unauthorized painting activities without proper emission controls and had significant chemical spills on the ground, including used oil drums lacking containment basins. Additionally, inspectors discovered an illegal depot of scrap metal, old tires, and exhausted batteries exposed to the elements. The owner faced fines exceeding 7,000 euros for environmental violations and workplace safety breaches, such as deactivated safety devices and improper electrical networks.

In Siracusa, municipal police identified eight individuals for illegal waste abandonment through the use of mobile camera traps. During one operation in the Stentinello district, a 59-year-old man was caught in the act of dumping special waste, including construction debris and tires, directly onto the ground. The individual was reported, his vehicle was seized, and his driver's license was revoked. These actions are part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal dumping and protect urban decorum and the environment.
