Sicily axis deer culling faces political opposition and transparency concerns

The Italian Animalist Party has expressed strong opposition to the planned culling of axis deer in the Iblei region of Sicily. The party is calling on the Sicilian Regional Government to immediately suspend operations authorized by the Regional Department of Agriculture, which were scheduled to begin following a protocol issued by the Ragusa Territory Office.

Patrick Battipaglia, the regional coordinator for the Italian Animalist Party, criticized the decision as being rooted in an outdated logic of wildlife management through killing. He argued that issues such as crop damage or road safety should be addressed through non-lethal prevention, fertility control, or translocation rather than shooting animals.

Simultaneously, regional deputy Stefania Campo has raised concerns regarding the transparency and consistency of the government's actions. Campo pointed to contradictions in the official timeline and protocols, noting that dates for the culling and rules regarding sanitary inspections appeared to shift following public mobilization. She also questioned the accuracy of the deer population estimates, noting that official figures have fluctuated from being described as ‘sporadic’ to approximately one hundred individuals without clear census data to support the change.
