Sicily: Baby born in ambulance during highway transfer
A baby girl named Andrea was born inside an ambulance while traveling on the A20 highway toward a hospital in Sicily. The emergency medical crew, operating the Delta 26 vehicle from the Capo d’Orlando 118 station, was dispatched to assist a woman in labor.
As the labor reached a decisive stage during transit, the medical team, including Dr. Licia Musca and responders Sebastiano Fazio and Nunziatina Messina, transformed the ambulance into a makeshift delivery room. The birth occurred at 8:49 PM. Six minutes later, at 8:55 PM, the ambulance arrived at the Barone Romeo Gynecological Hospital in Patti, where medical staff greeted the mother and newborn with spontaneous applause.
Riccardo Castro, President of SEUS 118 Sicilia, praised the professionalism and dedication of the Messina Emergency Operations Center and the specific crew for their ability to provide care and safety under unexpected circumstances.
