Sicily implements regional funding for schools, energy, and anti-mafia efforts
Sicily is implementing several regional initiatives focused on infrastructure, education, and economic development. The Schifani government has introduced a 2026 budget variation providing approximately 640 million euros for new expenditures, including a special fund for future legislative measures.
In the education sector, a 9 million euro three-year plan has been launched to enhance school canteens and introduce meal vouchers for high school students, aiming to combat school dropout rates and support working families. Additionally, the regional administration is addressing the energy transition, noting Sicily's significant role in wind and solar production.
Economic growth is being supported through 140 million euros in upcoming EU and national fund tenders in Messina, targeting business innovation and local authority support. Furthermore, the region has allocated 150,000 euros to assist municipal consortia in managing and valorizing assets confiscated from organized crime. Meanwhile, discussions continue regarding the effectiveness of regional employment incentives and the administrative challenges of managing regional budgets in smaller populations.
