Sicily cemeteries face scrutiny over improper handling of remains
Concerns regarding the management of municipal cemeteries are escalating in Sicily following reports of improper handling of human remains and personal effects in Marsala and Erice.
In Marsala, a local resident reported finding a photograph of a deceased individual abandoned on the ground near the Santo Spirito aisle. The individual believes the photo was accidentally discarded during scheduled exhumation and emptying operations of burial niches. Attempts to return the photo to cemetery officials were met with bureaucratic delays and instructions to contact the private contractor responsible for the services.
Simultaneously, in Erice, disturbing images surfaced on social media showing human bones scattered on the ground within the municipal cemetery. The site showed signs of disturbed earth and debris. Official notices indicated that ordinary exhumation operations were scheduled for March, with the company CIMER srl tasked as the manager. The discovery has raised questions regarding whether proper protocols were followed to protect and manage remains during these procedures.
