Sicily cruise ports projected to see significant growth by 2027

Projections from the Risposte Turismo study, presented at the Italian Cruise Day in Livorno, indicate a substantial increase in cruise passenger traffic for Sicilian ports by 2027. The port of Palermo is estimated to handle approximately 1,204,508 passengers in 2027, representing a 19.8% increase compared to 2026 forecasts.

To manage this growth, the Western Sicilian Sea Port System Authority has highlighted the need for improved port infrastructure, enhanced security, and better passenger management services. There is also a focus on strengthening connections between ports and cities to encourage tourism spending and local employment.

In the Strait of Messina area, the port of Messina is expected to maintain its strategic importance, ranking among the top eight Italian ports and 16th in the Mediterranean for cruise traffic by 2027. Authorities aim to create an integrated cruise offering by coordinating the services of Messina, Milazzo, and Reggio Calabria.
