Sicily declares state of emergency in Marsala and Petrosino after tornadoes

The Sicilian regional government has declared a 12-month state of emergency for the municipalities of Marsala and Petrosino following two devastating tornadoes on October 9. The decision, announced by President Renato Schifani, aims to provide resources for restoring essential infrastructure and supporting local businesses damaged by the storms.

Initial damage estimates total nearly 20 million euros, with 10.4 million euros in Marsala and 9.3 million euros in Petrosino. Approximately 3 million euros have been allocated for urgent interventions, including clearing debris from roads, repairing electrical lines, and securing public buildings such as schools and sports facilities. Salvo Cocina, the general manager of regional Civil Protection, has been appointed extraordinary commissioner to oversee the emergency response.
