Sicily earthquake: Magnitude 3.3 tremor recorded near Messina
A magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, off the north-eastern coast of Sicily. The seismic event was recorded at 20:29 local time, with the epicenter located approximately 22 kilometers north of Messina.
The earthquake originated at an intermediate depth of approximately 78 kilometers. Due to this significant depth, the energy released is expected to have minimal impact on the surface and may be felt only slightly by the population in nearby areas such as Messina and Reggio Calabria.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) monitored the event. The region, situated between the southern Tyrrhenian basin and the Strait of Messina, remains one of the most seismically active areas in Italy and the Mediterranean due to the tectonic collision between the African and Eurasian plates.
