Sicily expands access to biological therapies for severe asthma

Health authorities in Sicily have authorized new medical centers to prescribe biological drugs for the treatment of severe asthma. This expansion aims to provide highly personalized therapies to patients who do not respond to conventional treatments, improving their quality of life and reducing the need for invasive systemic treatments.

In the Caltanissetta area, the Pulmonology Unit of S. Elia Hospital, directed by Dr. Nicola Ciancio, has received authorization. This development expands the local healthcare network, which previously relied on limited centers in Gela, Sciacca, and Enna, thereby reducing the need for patients in the Caltanissetta, Enna, and Agrigento regions to travel long distances for specialized care.

Similarly, the Pulmonology Clinic at Biancavilla Hospital, under the Internal Medicine Unit of the ASP of Catania, has been recognized as a prescribing center. This move strengthens the regional network of prescribing centers and provides specialized assistance within the Catania province, particularly relevant given the hospital's role within the Biancavilla Site of National Interest.
