Sicily expands cancer screening access via pharmacies and community outreach

Health authorities in Sicily are expanding access to oncological screening through proximity-based models. In the province of Agrigento, an agreement between the ASP of Agrigento and Federfarma Agrigento has enabled pharmacies to serve as access points for cancer prevention programs.

Through this initiative, women aged 25 to 64 can access cervical cancer screening, women aged 50 to 69 can access breast cancer screening, and all citizens aged 50 to 69 can access colorectal cancer screening. The goal is to strengthen the territorial prevention network by making early diagnosis more accessible.

Similarly, the ASP of Enna has reported success using a proximity model to increase screening adherence rates, ranking first in Sicily for participation numbers. This strategy involves bringing healthcare services directly into communities via mobile units and specialized personnel at local events to overcome barriers such as fear, distrust, or logistical difficulties. The ASP of Enna is now looking to apply this successful model to upcoming vaccination campaigns.
