Sicily faces abortion service suspensions amid high conscientious objection rates
Access to voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVG) services has been suspended at the Policlinico Paolo Giaccone in Palermo due to a shortage of non-objecting medical personnel. This incident highlights a broader systemic issue in Sicily, where regional data indicates that between 80.6% and 86% of gynecologists are conscientious objectors.
Political figures, including Palmira Mancuso and Cleo Li Calzi, have criticized the regional administration for failing to guarantee constitutional rights. They noted that only 47.3% of the 55 obstetric and gynecological facilities in Sicily currently guarantee IVG services, compared to a national average of 61.1%. Critics argue that the lack of sufficient non-objecting staff leads to long waiting lists and forces women to seek expensive private alternatives.
Regional deputy Dario Safina attributed the service interruption to the regional government's failure to issue implementing decrees for regional law no. 23 of 2025, which could have allowed for external service agreements to maintain continuity of care.
