Sicily faces extensive damage from extreme weather events
Extreme weather events across Sicily have caused significant damage to infrastructure and property. In the province of Messina, including the Aeolian Islands, heavy rains have triggered landslides and the collapse of containment walls along provincial roads. The Mayor of Lipari, Riccardo Gullo, has requested a state of emergency and urgent technical meetings to address risks posed by debris accumulation in torrent basins.
In Marsala and Petrosino, the aftermath of a recent tornado has resulted in an estimated 20 million euro need for recovery. Cleanup efforts are ongoing to manage tons of debris, and the De Gasperi school in Terrenove remains unusable. Marsala Mayor Andreana Patti has met with European Commission Vice President Raffaele Fitto to discuss the situation and explore the possibility of utilizing the EU Solidarity Fund to support affected families and businesses.
