Sicily faces high travel costs for holiday commuters
Rising airfares and transportation costs are making it difficult for students and workers living away from Sicily to return home for the Christmas holidays. Data from Codacons indicates that round-trip flights from Northern Italy to Sicily can exceed 300 euros, a significant burden for those living outside their home regions.
Members of the Five Star Movement (M5S), including deputies Angelo Cambiano and Ida Carmina, have called for more stable territorial continuity policies rather than temporary emergency interventions. While the regional budget includes an increase of 5.23 million euros for 2026 to strengthen air connections, critics argue that a more permanent system is needed to ensure equitable and accessible mobility for all citizens.
