Sicily healthcare protests highlight hospital service cuts

Protests regarding the state of public healthcare have taken place in Sicily, specifically in Comiso and Vittoria. In Comiso, the Movimento 5 Stelle organized a sit-in at the Regina Margherita Hospital to denounce the reduction of services, staff shortages, and long waiting lists. The movement is advocating for a structural reform to replace the current provincial health authority model with a single Regional Health Agency to centralize management and reduce bureaucracy.

In Vittoria, Mayor Francesco Aiello concluded a three-day protest series with a sit-in at the local emergency room. While the event saw participation from local officials and the Movimento 5 Stelle, the Mayor noted limited turnout from neighboring mayors and citizens. Aiello criticized the national trend of prioritizing private healthcare over public services, emphasizing the need to bring these issues to public attention.
