Sicily highway safety protests follow A20 motorway collision
Labor unions CGIL, Filt, and Fillea Sicilia organized a protest involving car caravans on the A18 and A20 motorways to demand improved safety standards for Sicilian highways. Protesters converged at the Calatabiano service area to criticize the ongoing legal disputes between political bodies and concession companies, arguing that citizens' safety is being compromised by institutional conflicts.
CGIL Sicily Secretary Alfio Mannino criticized the regional government for allocating 13 million euros toward safety measures, contrasting it with 50 million euros allegedly spent on clientelistic measures. Technical experts suggest that over 5 billion euros are required to fully secure the infrastructure. The unions also called on the Ministry of Transport to address the condition of the Palermo-Catania route managed by Anas.
In a separate incident on the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, a violent collision between two vehicles occurred near the San Cono tunnel between Brolo and Rocca di Capri Leone. Two people were injured and transported to hospitals in Patti and Sant’Agata di Militello. While the impact was severe, authorities reported that the injured individuals were not in life-threatening condition.
