Sicily hospitals in crisis as staff shortages and unsafe conditions spark mayoral warnings

Municipal councilors of Sciacca, Raimondo Brucculeri and Maurizio Blò, issued a formal warning to mayor Fabio Termine over what they describe as a "grave crisis" at the Sciacca Hospital. They cite chronic shortages of health‑care staff – only three night‑shift operators, half the expected neurologists, and severe gaps in general surgery and urology – as well as excessive workloads that jeopardise patient safety.

In the neighbouring town of Scicli, mayor Mario Marino has asked the regional health authority (ASP Ragusa) for an urgent meeting to address the lack of functioning air‑conditioning at the Busacca Hospital and its 118 emergency unit. He warned that patients and health‑care workers are forced to endure extreme heat, saying, "After learning of the discomfort suffered by patients and operators, I deemed it necessary to seek an urgent dialogue with the ASP of Ragusa to find a rapid solution." Both incidents underline deteriorating health‑care conditions in Sicily’s provincial hospitals.

The two municipalities are calling for immediate remedial action to restore adequate staffing levels and essential facilities, highlighting a broader regional challenge for the health‑care system in southern Italy.
