Sicily implements integrated climate change adaptation strategies

Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani has outlined an integrated strategy to combat the effects of climate change, including wildfires, droughts, floods, and coastal erosion. Speaking at a conference in Taormina, Schifani emphasized the need for a regional prevention system that works in coordination with local municipalities.

To enhance preparedness, the regional Civil Protection agency will begin training 391 municipal officials to ensure rapid decision-making during weather alerts. Specific measures to combat wildfires include new staff hires, additional equipment, increased seasonal labor, and the implementation of new technologies such as sensors and a centralized control room. Additionally, the administration is addressing drought through the use of desalination plants, dams, and improved water networks.
