Sicily introduces bill to support local commerce in internal areas

A new bill has been introduced to the Sicilian Regional Assembly to support and valorize proximity commerce in the region's internal areas. Presented by the Democratic Party, the legislation aims to combat the depopulation of small towns by protecting essential local businesses.

Proponents, including deputy Fabio Venezia, argue that small businesses such as pharmacies, grocery stores, bakeries, and bars serve as vital social hubs and essential services, particularly for the elderly and those with limited mobility. The bill suggests that the closure of these establishments exacerbates social isolation and accelerates the migration of residents toward larger urban centers.

The proposed law includes the creation of a regional fund for proximity commerce within the Department of Productive Activities. This fund is intended to support businesses at risk of closing—facilitating generational transfers—and to encourage new entrepreneurial initiatives in these vulnerable territories.
