Sicily Issues Yellow Weather Alert for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms on July 28, 2026

The Italian Civil Protection Department (Protezione Civile) has issued a yellow hydro‑meteorological alert for the entire island of Sicily, effective from the evening of July 27 until midnight on July 28, 2026. Forecasts call for intense rain showers, thunderstorms, strong wind gusts and possible hail, with cumulative precipitation expected to reach moderate levels, especially in the central‑western sectors. The alert warns of heightened risk of flash flooding, especially in minor river basins and urbanized areas, and of rough sea conditions in the Strait of Sicily. Dams in several locations (including Gela, Paceco, Prizzi, Rosamarina and Santa Rosalia) are preparing controlled water releases, which could increase downstream flooding.

Local authorities and mayors have been urged to activate emergency plans, monitor river levels continuously and keep residents informed. Residents are advised to avoid low‑lying areas, secure outdoor property, check drainage systems and follow guidance from municipal officials and certified disaster‑recovery services.

The alert underscores growing volatility in Mediterranean weather patterns and aims to give communities sufficient lead time to protect infrastructure and personal safety.
