Sicily launches development plan for Cammino di San Giacomo

The Sicilian Region has introduced a pilot project to enhance the Cammino di San Giacomo, a 130-kilometer pilgrimage route designed to promote rural development across ten municipalities. Presented in Caltagirone, the initiative aims to transform the path into a more accessible route for thousands of pilgrims while boosting the economy of the island's interior.

The route begins at the Basilica of San Giacomo in Caltagirone and passes through several locations, including Piazza Armerina, Nicosia, and ends at the Sanctuary of San Giacomo in Capizzi. The project seeks to integrate faith, agriculture, culture, and slow tourism by connecting travelers with local producers, livestock farmers, and artisans.

Key components of the plan include the creation of a network of “Custodians of the Path,” consisting of local mayors and forestry workers, the introduction of a web app, new signage, and the “Pilgrim’s Bread” initiative. Efforts to improve greenery, urban decor, and signage are expected to be completed by the end of October, with long-term goals of promoting the route to international markets.
