Sicily launches new 'flower designer' professional qualification
The Sicily regional government issued a decree, signed by Regional Education and Training Assessor Mimmo Turano, that creates a new professional qualification called “flower designer.” The role is defined as distinct from a traditional florist, encompassing artistic, botanical, organisational and entrepreneurial skills to manage the full lifecycle of floral products for events, weddings and commercial spaces. The programme offers two pathways: a 400‑hour course for those already working in the sector and an 800‑hour course for unemployed or workers from other fields, both open to anyone aged 18 or older with a secondary school diploma.
The qualification was developed in partnership with the regional administration of Schifani and the industry association Assofioristi‑Confesercenti, whose national president Ignazio Ferrante highlighted the potential for higher profit margins compared with standard flower retail. The decree will be posted on the official website of the Regione Siciliana in the coming days.
