Sicily lawmaker proposes protections for maritime fishing workers

Dario Safina, a regional deputy from the Democratic Party, has introduced a bill to the Sicilian Regional Assembly aimed at strengthening protections for maritime fishing workers.

The proposed legislation seeks to ensure that public compensation intended to offset industry losses also benefits onboard crews. Specifically, the bill proposes that public contributions for lost income be included in the calculation of “alla parte” remuneration, a system that links maritime workers' pay to the economic results of the catch.

To ensure transparency, shipowners would be required to provide accounting documentation regarding received contributions to both the crew and trade unions. Additionally, the bill introduces a daily indemnity of 30 euros, up to a maximum of 600 euros per month, for workers forced to stop fishing due to adverse weather conditions.
