Sicily maritime transport: ferry fares rise for state-regulated routes

A dispute has emerged in Sicily regarding maritime transport costs for the minor islands. Starting September 10, the Società di Navigazione Siciliana (SNS) has reinstated an 18% price increase for ferry and hydrofoil connections governed by the Siremar-SNS state convention. This hike affects residents, commuters, tourists, and commercial goods transport.

Federalberghi Isole di Sicilia has expressed shock at the move, calling it a “behindhand” that undermines the economic stability and reputation of the islands. The association noted that this 18% increase follows previous hikes on state routes since 2022.

In response, Sicilian Regional Councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility, Alessandro Aricò, clarified that the price increases do not apply to regional maritime services. He stated that the regional government has absorbed rising operational costs—including a 21.6% increase in diesel prices and cumulative inflation of 10-11%—to keep regional ticket tariffs stable and unchanged for the past four years.
