Sicily moves ahead with Gioiosa Marea interchange while MP warns Siracusa‑Gela highway still lacks funds

Regional authorities in Sicily held a meeting that advanced the planning of the Gioiosa Marea highway interchange. Mayors Giusi La Galia (Gioiosa Marea) and Salvatore Cipriano (Piraino), together with regional deputy Pino Galluzzo, met with Infrastructure Minister Alessandro Aricò. They reviewed an updated technical‑economic feasibility study, aligned with the new regional price list, and outlined administrative steps and financing pathways for the design and first construction lot. The ministers and local officials stressed the interchange’s strategic role for improving access, supporting tourism and economic activity, and enhancing civil‑protection readiness.

Separately, MP Filippo Scerra (Five Star Movement) criticised the recent inclusion of the Siracusa‑Gela motorway in the Consorzio per le Autostrade Siciliane's three‑year public‑works plan, calling it “senza fondi resta altro annuncio”. He argued that without concrete refinancing—especially for the stalled Modica‑Scicli segment—the project risks becoming another unfulfilled promise, and accused centre‑right parties of diverting development funds to a bridge project over the Strait.

Scerra urged the government to honour existing commitments and promptly fund the missing sections, turning announced plans into tangible construction.
