Sicily parking transparency concerns amid rising tourism in Taormina

An analysis by the Consumerismo Observatory reveals a lack of transparency regarding parking regulations in Sicily. While parking rates in the region are among the lowest in Italy—such as 5 euros per hour in Taormina—most municipalities are failing to comply with the 2024 Highway Code. This law requires local authorities to provide written justification for the number of free parking spaces maintained alongside paid blue zones.

Among major Sicilian cities, only Palermo has publicly disclosed its figures, reporting 6,700 non-tariffed spaces out of 18,422 total spots. However, consumer advocates note that these non-tariffed spaces often include yellow zones reserved for specific categories, which may lower the actual availability for the general public. In Taormina, discrepancies have also been noted between official sources and municipal company documentation.

In response to concerns regarding mobility and tourism management, the municipal company ASM Taormina defended the current situation. Citing data from the PayTourist platform for the period of July 1 to August 13, 2026, ASM reported an increase in both tourist flows and the duration of stays compared to the previous year. The company noted a 2.34% increase in average daily presences and a 4.89% increase in average nights per guest, alongside rising usage of parking facilities such as Porta Pasquale.
