Sicily political dispute erupts over Aerca environmental funds

A political conflict has intensified in Sicily following the exclusion of the municipalities of Solarino and Floridia from recent Aerca fund allocations. These funds, totaling over four million euros, are designated for municipalities located in areas at high risk of environmental crisis.

Regional deputies Giuseppe Carta (Grande Sicilia-Mpa) and Tiziano Spada (PD) are at the center of the dispute. Spada, who also serves as the mayor of Solarino, has accused political figures of using the funds as a form of “political blackmail,” alleging that the exclusion was a retaliatory measure against local administrations that refused to follow specific political lines. He has called on local councilors to choose between supporting their territory or those they claim are penalizing it.

Giuseppe Carta has rejected these accusations, labeling them “lies” and calling for “less victimhood and more concreteness.” Carta maintains that the municipalities were ineligible because they failed to implement the environmental interventions required by law to mitigate risks. The tension has expanded to include Marco Carianni, the mayor of Floridia, who publicly challenged Carta via social media, accusing him of prioritizing political power maps over the needs of the local communities.
