Sicily political tension rises over Vannacci image controversy

Political tensions are rising in Sicily following a controversy involving Roberto Vannacci and Undersecretary Matilde Siracusano. The dispute was triggered by Vannacci sharing a manipulated image of Siracusano on social media, in which her clothing appeared altered. Siracusano described the incident as “deplorable” and is considering legal action.

Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani condemned the incident as “grave and unacceptable,” criticizing both the verbal attacks and the manipulation of the photograph. Schifani emphasized that respect for the individual must precede political opposition.

The incident has also sparked shifts within the regional political landscape. Tommaso Calderone has moved from the centrist Forza Italia toward the more radical Futuro Nazionale, a move aligned with the growing influence of Vannacci’s political movement. This shift has caused concern among centrist leaders, such as Saverio Romano of Noi Moderati, who argue that such radicalism is incompatible with a modern, moderate, and Atlanticist center-right coalition.
