Sicily private schools investigated for major tax fraud

Authorities in Sicily have uncovered a major tax evasion and fraud scheme operating through private schools in the Palermo province. An investigation by the Guardia di Finanza revealed that a cooperative managing educational institutions in Cefalù and Termini Imerese failed to declare over 1.5 million euros in income, resulting in an estimated 660,000 euros in evaded taxes.

The investigation, which grew out of a prior probe by the Carabinieri, uncovered a complex system involving the exploitation of approximately 150 employees, including teachers and administrative staff. Investigators allege that while salaries appeared to be paid formally, workers were allegedly forced to return portions of their compensation to the company to maximize corporate profits and reduce tax burdens.

Additional allegations include the simulation of volunteer work to avoid regular employment contracts and the improper receipt of public funds co-financed by the European Union. The company's administrator has been reported to the Prosecutor's Office for false declarations, and authorities have requested the preventive seizure of approximately 105,000 euros.
