Sicily railway project faces significant delays amid infrastructure crisis
The development of the Palermo-Catania railway line in Sicily is facing significant delays, with central work lots expected to be pushed back by at least two years. Reports indicate that progress on several key sections is stalled due to a lack of specialized labor, water shortages for machinery, and missing definitive designs from RFI and WeBuild.
Specifically, work on the Lercara-Caltanissetta lot has remained largely inactive for seven months. While the Caltanissetta-Enna section has recently been unblocked, it remains far from completion. These delays impact the goal of reducing travel time between the two cities to two hours.
In response to broader infrastructure issues, the Italia Viva-Casa Riformista party has launched a petition calling for the resignation of the regional Minister for Infrastructure and Mobility, Alessandro Aricò. The group cites a systemic failure in managing Sicilian transport, including critical issues with the Palermo-Catania highway, airport management during volcanic activity, and unreliable connections to minor islands.
