Sicily railway service resumes on Palermo-Catania line

Rail traffic has resumed on the entire Palermo-Catania line following the completion of infrastructure maintenance and enhancement works conducted by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), a subsidiary of the FS Group. The upgrades, which involved approximately 250 workers and an investment of roughly 85 million euros, included track renewal, tunnel consolidation, and the upgrading of signaling systems to improve safety and reliability.

Travel between Palermo and Catania now takes approximately 2 hours and 57 minutes. While the Palermo-Catania service is fully operational, maintenance continues on the Palermo-Agrigento line between Cammarata and Agrigento until September 30. Full commercial service on the entire Palermo-Agrigento line is scheduled to resume on October 1, following the installation of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and the creation of new stops at Agrigento Ospedale and Agrigento Fontanelle.
