European industry leaders call for urgent action to prevent deindustrialization
Major European industrial organizations, including Confindustria, BDI, and MEDEF, have issued a joint document titled “How to Save European Industry” in Berlin. The group, participating in the Trilateral Business Forum, warns of a growing risk of deindustrialization driven by geopolitical tensions, high energy costs, and global overcapacity.
To combat these challenges, the organizations are calling for a more assertive trade policy, including increased reciprocity with China and stronger defense instruments against unfair practices. They emphasize that European industries require up to 1.2 trillion euros annually to support competitiveness, decarbonization, and resilience. The group also advocates for streamlining bureaucracy and completing the internal market based on the Enrico Letta “One Market” report.
In Italy, discussions at the Ecomondo event highlighted specific sectoral concerns. Roberto Tasca of A2A called for a unified EU market for the circular economy to eliminate regulatory discrepancies between member states. Additionally, Carlo Riccini of Farmindustria noted that while the Italian pharmaceutical sector excels in research and production, it faces intense international competition and requires more efficient resource allocation and faster investment regulations.
