Sicily seeks industrial growth and Mediterranean hub status
Sicily is facing a strategic push to transform into a Mediterranean industrial hub, leveraging its central geographic position between Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. While the regional economy grew by 0.6% in 2025 and non-oil exports rose by 7.1%, the Bank of Italy noted a slowdown compared to 2024. Despite a 1.34% increase in the number of businesses—outperforming the national average—the industrial sector remains fragile, characterized by a labor market that lags behind national averages.
Senator Nino Germanà has proposed a strategic vision for the year 2032, emphasizing that Sicily's growth must be driven by internal decisions rather than external ones. His proposal focuses on infrastructure development, such as the Strait of Messina Bridge, and creating professional opportunities to prevent youth emigration. The goal is to convert existing investments into structural industrial development and qualified employment.
