Sicily seeks membership in European Semiconductor Regions Alliance

The Sicilian Region has formally requested to join the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance (ESRA), a network of regions dedicated to the development of the microelectronics sector. The move aims to strengthen Sicily's role in technological sovereignty and semiconductor policy, specifically leveraging the microelectronics hub in Catania.

A central component of this initiative is the “Campus SiC” project by STMicroelectronics, which involves developing a new integrated plant for silicon carbide power devices. This program is supported by a multi-party agreement involving the Sicilian Region, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Invitalia, and STMicroelectronics. The total public co-financing for the initiative is approximately 2 billion euros, including up to 300 million euros from the FESR Sicily 2021-2027 program.
