Sicily Sets June 4 Meeting to Resolve Agrigento Summer Water Supply Dispute

Francesco Colianni, Sicily’s regional minister for Energy and Public Utility Services, scheduled a meeting for Thursday, 4 June, at the regional office with representatives of the municipal water company Aica and the private operator Siciliacque. The talks aim to reach an agreement on increased water deliveries for the Agrigento area during the summer months, a region deemed at risk of drought.

Colianni emphasized the need to avoid legal battles that could jeopardize citizens’ right to water, noting that no current water shortage has been recorded. He called for swift parliamentary action on the Schifani government’s water‑law proposal, which seeks a single regional water‑management model to replace fragmented authorities. The region has already allocated more than €80 million from FSC funds for network upgrades and loss‑reduction projects, with further funding for water and sewage infrastructure expected by June.
