Sicily tests new wildfire detection technologies
Authorities in Sicily have conducted field tests for the Progetto Emergenza Incendi to improve the early detection of forest fires. The exercises, held in late October and early November, took place in the Bosco di San Matteo in Erice and at the Trapani Fire Department testing grounds.
The testing involved various technologies, including satellites capable of detecting heat from space, solar-powered sensor networks designed to detect smoke, intelligent cameras for automatic flame recognition, and drones for rapid verification of reports. These tools were tested using controlled fires to measure detection times and the speed of information transmission to emergency services.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Sicilian Region, the Municipality of Erice, the Ettore Majorana Foundation, and the National Fire Corps. International researchers from the United States and Germany also participated in the program to evaluate the effectiveness of these systems in preventing the devastating wildfires that frequently affect the region.
