Sicily tornadoes cause widespread damage and injuries in Marsala

Twin tornadoes, originating from waterspouts over the sea, struck the western coast of Sicily on Friday, causing widespread destruction in Marsala, Petrosino, and Mazara del Vallo. The extreme weather event, described by Sicily's Civil Protection head Salvatore Cocina as having unprecedented intensity similar to American tornadoes, resulted in at least 11 injuries, including six children.

The Alcide De Gasperi school in Marsala sustained significant structural damage, including broken windows and a partially collapsed ceiling, forcing the evacuation of approximately 273 students. In Petrosino, a vehicle was swept into a ravine, leaving two occupants seriously injured. The storm also overturned numerous vehicles and trucks, uprooted trees, and toppled utility poles, disrupting road and rail services.

Local authorities, including the Mayor of Marsala and the Mayor of Petrosino, have requested a national state of emergency to secure the technical and financial resources necessary for reconstruction. Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani has pledged regional support and is overseeing damage assessments. Experts have linked the increased frequency of such extreme weather events to the climate crisis and rising Mediterranean sea temperatures.
