Sicily manages education reforms and tornado recovery efforts
In Sicily, the 'Stati Generali dell’Istruzione' regional event in Palermo is addressing educational trends, with Minister Giuseppe Valditara noting that explicit school dropout rates in the region have fallen from 18.8% in 2022 to 13.7% in 2025. Valditara highlighted that over 2.1 billion euros have been allocated to Sicilian education since 2022, including 1.15 billion euros for school buildings.
Separately, the communities of Marsala and Petrosino are recovering from severe tornadoes that struck in early October. The disaster caused significant damage, including the partial collapse of a wall at the Alcide De Gasperi school in Terrenove. Eleven families have been displaced, and initial damage estimates for the Marsala area alone reach 11.15 million euros, with school-related damages estimated at over 6 million euros.
Marsala Mayor Andreana Patti met with European Commission Executive Vice President Raffaele Fitto in Brussels to request emergency resources through the European Solidarity Fund. Efforts are underway to relocate approximately 300 students to alternative facilities, such as the Santa Chiara institute, to ensure educational continuity while reconstruction resources are secured.
