Sicily towns grapple with power outage and water cut, residents protest

In Marina di Modica, located on Sicily's coast, residents endured repeated evening blackouts over two days, leaving homes without electricity, water and air‑conditioning. Business owners Antonino Guarrasi and Susanna Floridia reported damage to their hospitality premises. Mayor Maria Monisteri replied on Facebook, saying Enel cited excessive refrigerant use and that emergency generators and civil‑protection groups were available while the fault was resolved.

Meanwhile, in the Maddalusa district of Agrigento, the municipal decree issued by Mayor Michele Sodano limited new water connections to people classified as "fragile" and halted private tanker deliveries that had operated since May 9. The neighbourhood committee condemned the ordinance as discriminatory, alleging that other nearby areas continued to receive water despite similar conditions. Residents demanded equal access to drinking water, describing the prolonged denial as a violation of the right to water.

Both communities have staged protests demanding prompt restoration of services and fair treatment from local authorities.
