Sicily transport crisis: Italia Viva demands assessor's resignation
The political party Italia Viva has launched a public petition demanding the resignation of Alessandro Aricò, Sicily's regional assessor for infrastructure and mobility. The party accuses Aricò of a failed management of the island's transport sector.
Key criticisms include the poor state of the Palermo-Catania motorway, described as a series of endless construction sites, and safety concerns regarding tunnels and viaducts managed by the Consorzio autostrade siciliane (Cas). The party also highlighted a lack of regional planning for airports, particularly during volcanic activity from Mount Etna, and criticized the reliance on temporary flight bonuses rather than structural solutions for territorial continuity.
Additionally, the party pointed to inadequate connections for minor islands, citing aging vessels and high costs, as well as delays in railway development and insufficient responses to fuel crises affecting local families and businesses.
