Sicily water crisis: ANAFePC takes legal action against 19 municipalities
The National Academy for Alfa Training and Promotion of Culture, Work and Social (ANAFePC) has initiated legal action against 19 Sicilian municipalities following their failure to respond to transparency requests regarding the regional water crisis.
After a 30-day deadline passed without response from most local institutions, ANAFePC filed appeals with the Regional Department of Local Autonomies, the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC), and the Court of Auditors. The association seeks to clarify the management of the emergency, specifically requesting data on pipeline leaks, the status of construction sites funded by extraordinary and PNRR funds over the last five years, and the criteria used for water rationing.
In some areas, water service interruptions have lasted up to 20 days, placing significant strain on families and businesses. While Piazza Armerina and Caltanissetta complied with the transparency requests, 19 other municipalities—including Agrigento, Enna, Siracusa, and Gela—did not. ANAFePC is now calling for the activation of substitute powers and inspection commissions to address the lack of accountability.
